Editor Q&A: Chloe Malle and Elisabeth von Thurn und Taxis Inline

2/12Q: What do you wear to the Vogue offices?
“I am basically wearing my Thakoon Masai plaid parka which injects a necessary pop of color into New York’s January landscape, and my black knee high boots. My idea of work dressing is a fine line between schoolmistress and Hitchcock heroine.”

3/12Q: What are some of your favorite places to go out in New York City?
“Film Forum and Pulino’s Bar & Pizzeria in Manhattan; Hotel Delmano and DuMont Burger in Brooklyn.”
4/12Q: Which parties are you looking forward to this year? What will you wear?
“I always like the ballet and opera benefits because you get to attend the opening night of the performance and it always makes me feel like I am in an Edith Wharton novel. Also, last year was my very first Costume Institute Gala at the Met, and that was pretty spectacular.
I am a bit vertically challenged so it’s hard for me to find long dresses that don’t make a puddle of fabric on the floor. When I do find a dress that fits or I get something perfectly altered, I tend to wear it proudly. I am a big fan of the bright-colored evening gown—J. Mendel and Zac Posen have beautiful ones—and for less formal events, I love an embellished jacket. It looks both sumptuous, but sleekly tailored.”

5/12Q: Whose style
“I always admire the way Lauren Bacall dressed in To Have and Have Not, all tailored suits and sly humor. It may be lame to say, but I am also a big fan of my mother [Candice Bergen]’s style; from her Belgian loafers to her oversize jewelry, she always hits the mark.”
6/12Q: What piece do you most covet from the spring collectsions?
“I loved the oversaturated florals from Creatures of the Wind, Ralph Lauren’s Gatsby pastels, and Louis Vuitton’s oversize eyelet. I would also be thrilled to wear one of Oscar de la Renta’s spring ball dresses.”

8/12Q: Which parties are you looking forward to this year? What will you wear?
“Our wild boar shoot at our home in Germany is always a riot because we invite lots of friends. We spend the day out in the woods, but then we get all dressed up in long gowns to dance around in the evenings. I also love art-fair parties—like those at the Venice Biennale.
As for what I might wear, my mantra is that, no matter how chic the event, I don’t want to look too prim. I like wearing short cocktail frocks to black-tie events, it just always feels more like me, and a bright red lip is always a staple."

9/12Q: What are your favorite New York spots?
“I love going to The Waverly Inn for a cozy bite with friends, and Tiny’s in TriBeCa is always fun.”
10/12Q: What piece do you most covet from the spring collectsions?
“I love the slightly over-the-top, girlie, and cartoonish elements a lot of designers are going for this season. Meadham Kirchhoff’s pastel shades, Prada’s crazy car prints, the glittery jewelry and crop tops at Miu Miu, and all the mixing and matching going on at Proenza Schouler. And I do love the motocross chic at Alexander Wang—I feel there is a lot to look forward to this spring.”

11/12Q: Who
“Edie Sedgwick, Debbie Harry, Chloë Sevigny, Michelle Obama, and my friend Eugenie Niarchos each have their own great sense of style.”
12/12Q: What is always in your going-out clutch?
“Gum, my phone, this little embellished pocket mirror I just picked up at a market in Mexico City, and Crème de la Mer lip balm.”
