The Met Gala 2024 dress code was appropriately esoteric. Themed “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” the accompanying exhibit deals in themes of natural, archival fashion, and A.I. “The Garden of Time,” dress code draws on both the exhibit and a short story written J.G. Ballard in 1962, that set in a dystopia-tinged paradise. A pre-carpet interpretation found our imaginations running wild—and the evening’s beauty did not disappoint.

Gwendoline Christie kicked things off with a beauty look reminiscent of Margiela’s axis-tilting Spring 2024 couture show—all sculptural frizz and doll-like makeup—an approach that was also echoed in Zendaya’s penciled brows and merlot lip. Jennifer Lopez’s undone topknot was all sweetness and flyaways, while Emma Chamberlain’s wet-look take was marked by snaking front pieces and gorgeously paired with a moody mauve makeup palette. Rapunzelian lengths were favored by several attendees: Madelyn Cline paired her down-to-there waves with a subtle yet incandescent makeup look; Dove Cameron coupled hers with pops of pink and red. Emily Ratajkowski’s updo was accented by a trio of stiff sprays that bursted from the braided knot, while Greta Lee’s modern mullet offered a similarly futuristic bent to her white, lichen-like Loewe dress.

Bold brows and extra-long lashes—the work of makeup artist Pat McGrath—defined Cara Delevigne’s chainmail hood Stella McCartney look; Ariana Grande’s state-of-the-art fantasy was borne of duo of eye embellishments that landed somewhere between wings and gills; and Amanda Seyfried’s cropped silver coiffure owed something to Medusa. And in the full-tilt method camp, Doja Cat cried rivulets of inky tears, while Rebecca Hall allowed her Danielle Frankel gown to put down roots with arms and shoulders painted in bright blooms inspired by the dress’s florals.
