Miami’s Coconut Grove neighborhood has recently undergone a major facelift. Where downmarket chain eateries and aging retail shops once stood, there are now slick glass facades, a luxury hotel (by the Cipriani family), and upscale restaurants galore–the crown jewel of which opened just last night, after years in the making.
The Key Club is David Grutman and Groot Hospitality’s latest venue. It’s an elevated American bar and grill, infused with visual cues that pull from the intimate warmth and geometric forms of mid-century Brazilian design. It serves a steak and seafood-centric menu, a delicious appetizer called Chips & Caviar, and a great happy hour martini (worth noting: The Key Club hosts happy hour seven days a week). And, judging by the kick-off crowd–a tight-knit circle of high-profile Miamians, all of whom turned out–it’s going to be a hit.
Grutman and his wife, Isabela Grutman, partnered with the label Zegna to celebrate the launch. Resident rockstar Lenny Kravitz danced. David Beckham, who now splits time between the U.K. and Florida, came through–he’s waiting on a high-interest city vote to move ahead with a new stadium for his hometown soccer team, Inter Miami (the vote is scheduled for early April). Tennis star Juan Martin Del Potro was also present, after recently competing again after a two and a half year hiatus due to necessary knee surgeries–there’s speculation as to his imminent retirement. Chrome Hearts virtuoso Laurie Lynn Stark, Miami mayor Francis Suarez, Miami-Dade county mayor Daniela Levine Cava and many more filled the room, which stayed crowded late into the night.
The Key Club opens for full-service today, March 11.
