Iman on Iman: The Stories Behind Her Replica Handbag Store Shoots
Released on 08/21/2017
My husband's passing to me, his absence is ever present,
you know, so it's not like he has left.
From the public love and the public grieving,
and all that, he is constantly around.
I remember this very much because
it was one of my first Arthur Elgort.
You see, she knows what she's doing,
she's looking at the camera and pouted her lips,
and both hands in pocket, head raised up,
and I'm like looking to the side.
This is the story when I interviewed Waris
about female mutilation, and you can see
the sadness in her face and I was holding her,
but she's a very courageous girl,
very courageous girl.
It looks just like this is my own clothes,
look how simple they are, you know,
but they're all designer clothes.
And this could only be achieved by Grace Coddington,
you know, she makes couture and everyday wear
the same, gives it the same space, and the same importance.
A perfect match.
Penn did this photograph, it was the first time,
wasn't the first time I met Penn,
but it was the first and the only picture
actually he did of me and David.
People always think, Oh portraits are so easy.
Actually they are the most difficult things to shoot,
a portrait, because you're trying to give an essence
for something that's cropped so tight,
the essence of who you are.
Here it is with my husband, David Bowie,
in South Africa, Bruce Weber, and I love
that it's very, being so public,
but at the same time, so private.
And this is David and I dancing,
that's my daughter's favorite.
All the clothes that David is wearing is his own clothes.
He wanted to be himself, so it was just his clothes.
This is close to my heart, because this,
I was three months pregnant with Alexandria,
Alexi, my daughter, we all went to LA
so Herb Ritts could shoot it, and this
is my own ankle bracelet and that was it.
It has a lot of grace to it, definitely
it shows something very maternal and very feminine.
This was the interview that went with
my retirement from modeling.
I didn't want my last pictures to be Helmut Newton.
I want to do something more classic,
but she was very smart and she still is very smart,
and she knew what she was doing.
It really showed, especially this picture,
it shows to me the finale of my resigning from modeling.
You leave your imprint, that's what the photograpy
is about, leave an imprint that people can remember you by.
