Listen, I'm not gonna spend time convincing
you that climate change is happening.
It's happening!
I want to focus on the future,
and something called a Green New Deal.
So remember the original New Deal,
Franklin Roosevelt's response to the Great Depression?
It was a bunch of government projects, reforms, and relief
to help people and create jobs.
It gave us things like Social Security,
and public housing, and even the Central Park Zoo.
The New Deal wasn't perfect,
but it's a good model for how the
government can step in during a crisis.
And let me remind you, climate change is a crisis.
That's where the green part comes in.
A Green New Deal says the government should invest
in infrastructure, technology,
and sustainability, Roosevelt style,
so that we could deal with rising
sea levels, and extreme weather.
[kettle whistling]
And, you know, make our planet last a little longer
for humans, and animals, and plants, and fish.
Hi, friends.
But what exactly does that look like?
We don't know yet.
Different candidates have their own versions.
Like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York,
who wants the U.S. to transition to
100 percent renewable energy by 2035.
Some supporters think this should
guarantee good paying green jobs,
and pretty much everyone agrees our economy
needs to go carbon-free and fast.
Of course, a Green New Deal isn't popular with everyone.
Donald Trump rolled back environmental regulations
and even appointed people who say climate change is fake.
It isn't and that's tm.
And don't forget about the companies
who make tons of cash off fossil fuels.
But it's the people who have the
least that will suffer the most.
Climate change is a major issue,
and people are really bad at talking about it.
So when you go vote in November,
and you're definitely voting,
find out if your candidate supports a Green New Deal.
Because now you know.
