Now You Know: Olivia Munn Explains I.C.E.
Released on 10/30/2018
If you've been paying attention to the news
you might have noticed a lot of people
are talking about ICE.
Thanks, but I wasn't talking about this, but I'll take it.
Appreciate that.
Okay, ICE, Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
So, here's what you need to know.
[upbeat music]
ICE was created in 2003 as a response to 9/11.
Now part of the new Department of Homeland Security,
ICE's job was to find people living in the United States
without legal immigration status and deport them.
Thanks.
With ICE, the government started deporting
a lot more people than they used to.
Deportations reached a record high under Barack Obama,
but Donald Trump introduced a new zero-tolerance policy
so people who have been working and living in America
for decades are being rounded up and deported
even if they haven't committed a crime.
ICE is even detaining people who came here
looking for asylum,
and you've probably heard about the thousands of children
ICE separated from their families
and held in detention centers this year.
Trump signed an executive order directing ICE
to stop separating families in June.
However, hundreds of kids have yet to be reunited
with their parents.
Actually, investigators found that some
were even put up for adoption here in the U.S.
Politicians have different views on ICE.
Republicans like Steve Scalise
think we should leave ICE alone.
They say that getting rid of it
would lead to open borders.
Some, like Democrat Pramila Jayapal
have called it a rogue agency
and say that we should abolish ICE.
Others like Democrat Kamala Harris
think ICE should be overhauled
and the agency should just start from scratch.
So, when you vote in your midterm elections this November
and you will vote,
your candidate will have an opinion on ICE.
Maybe they wanna abolish it, maybe they won't,
but you'll need to understand it first.
You need to know what ICE is.
So, now you know.
