Celebrities Remember Prince

My favorite memory of Prince is ...

When I was working with him in the studio,

I would always know when he was coming

'cause you would just hear this in the corridor,

click-clack, click-clack, click.

Well, Prince was playing an after-show gig

and I guess he wasn't used to seeing me in a suit.

I walked in, he saw me in a suit for the first time.

He's like,

Brother, you looking sharp,

and then he reached in his pocket

and he tipped me

$50

for looking sharp.

He epitomized sex appeal and

the sex symbol of the artist.

Yeah, he was the true artist in every way

and he could play every instrument there was.

I got a phone call from my manager years ago

saying Prince wants to meet you at the studio,

and I was like, stop lying, and it was true.

And it was here in New York,

and it was at Electric Lady Studios.

He walked in and my first thought was he's so beautiful.

What the hell?

You know, he was an insomniac.

He had no time signature.

I went bowling once at 2:00 in the morning,

to go see movies at three, four in the morning.

He was the funk man.

He would always say it's the space in between the notes

that tells you how funky it is or how funky it ain't.

This was a man that truly

walked to the beat of his own drum.

He was very conscious about what he wore,

and he wanted to support a lot of young designers.

He didn't care where you came from.

He wanted to make sure that he supported creativity

and he supported new talent.

We loved competing against each other

about who was dressed the best.

When I saw him at the Garden, he had his eyes closed.

He was singing and then he opened his eyes

and he was like, Cyndi?

And I was kinda like chuffed that he kinda knew me.

I hope wherever he is he's at peace

and he's making great music.

If we could describe Prince ...

In one word ...

Oh, that's easy, funky.

Maverick.

Eccentric.

Electric.

Prince needs 10 words, but I will use one.

Phenomenal.

Born way too soon, you get four.

Sexy-iconic, it's a hyphen, it's a hyphen.

Genuine.

I used to call him a alien, so ...

Unique.

Purple.

(laughing)

Genius.

He would have wanted me to say tell 'em I had soul.

He's beyond a legend.
