These Celebrity Couples Nailed Red Carpet Style at the Emmys

On Sunday night, the 2020 Emmy Awards—otherwise known as television’s biggest night—will take place virtually and without a real-life audience. The 72nd annual awards show, which will be hosted this year by Jimmy Kimmel for the third time, will honor the best shows of the year, with series such as Schitt’s Creek, Watchmen, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel leading the charge. In honor of the glitzy soirée, Vogue is taking a look back at some of the best moments on the red carpet—and in particular, the best-dressed couples who have walked it together. (There is, sadly, no red carpet this year.)

Going way back to the late ’90s and early aughts, some stylish pairs—a few of whom are still together—showcase the very best of the era’s fashion. Who could forget that Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston moment in 2000 when Aniston wore a minimal strapless red gown—with a tiny satin shoulder bag!—and Brad wore a streamlined suit. Or how about in 2008 when Ellen DeGeneres played up wife Portia de Rossi’s emerald slip dress with a flower pin secured onto her vest.

As for more recent couples? In 2017 Gabrielle Union—who attended the Emmys for the first time that year—looked chic in a beaded cape gown by Zuhair Murad, while Dwyane Wade was dapper in a tuxedo by her side. That same year, Nicole Kidman—who won the Best Actress category for her work in Big Little Lies—wowed in a red gown with a tight bodice and full skirt, designed by Raf Simons’s Calvin Klein By Appointment, and her husband, Keith Urban, supported her in a classic black suit with a matching tie. Last year, Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Falchuk did coordinating black-and-white evening wear, he in a classic tuxedo and she in a vintage Valentino gown.
