The Best Dressed Stars at the 2023 Tony Awards

The annual Tony Awards—which honor the best Broadway productions of the year, and the stars who lead them—are always an elegant affair. It’s far better than your standard black-tie affair, as the looks embody a sense of theatricality and showmanship as well. The 2023 bash at the United Palace in New York City was no different: A-listers hit the step and repeat in their finest formal attire. But there were some more unexpected looks in the mix, too.

Leading the night was Lupita Nyong’o, who subverted a black suit when she paired it with a silver breastplate by the Pakistani designer Misha Japanwala, molded to her own body. “[Japanwala’s] work is rooted in the rejection and deconstruction of external shame attached to one’s body,” the actor wrote on her Instagram page. “In her artistic process, she creates a realistic and true record of a person’s body as an act of resistance and celebration, and an insistence on being allowed to exist freely in our bodies.” It was the night’s boldest choice.

But even the more traditional, Old Hollywood-style gowns shined. In a sprightly yellow Gucci number, Jessica Chastain brought a ray of sunshine to the carpet. Her caped dress was punctuated by the Italian label’s High Cheap Replica Handbags necklace made of white gold, emeralds, diamonds, and a 35.9-carat mandarin garnet. Lea Michele opted for pretty florals in a printed Emilia Wickstead ball gown with a squared neckline. Meanwhile, Ariana DeBose—the host of the night—glimmered in her plunging foiled Prada dress, with bejeweled accents along the neckline. Who needs a statement necklace when your dress doubles as jewelry?

As for the evening’s best dressed men, stars such as Ben Platt, James Ijames, and Josh Groban all took distinctive approaches to the classic suit and tie. Just with a little more pizzazz!
