Few people have defined free-spirited, bohemian fashion quite like Stevie Nicks. Nicks turns 72 today and the famed Fleetwood Mac vocalist’s stage presence is just as mesmerizing as it was when she first burst onto the music scene back in the 1970s. Nicks’s signature sense of style has been just as captivating as the mystical persona that she embodies on stage. Her groovy, witchy style is so indelible and recognizable she even played a witch on American Horror Story because of it. Her dramatic hats and handkerchief hems have only continued to bewitch her fans (as well as fashion designers, who often take cues from her dazzling performance outfits).

Part of the reason it’s so recognizable is because it’s been consistent: the singer has long been devoted to her beaded and fringed shawls, which, at this point, are basically an extension of Nicks herself (along with her famous ribbon-adorned tambourine, of course). In the ’70s and ’80s, Nicks’s style fit easily into the glitz-and-glam of the two eras—plenty of people were sporting bohemian, crystal-embellished dresses in luxe velvets or laces. While many went more minimal in the decades that followed, Nicks has continued on with her love of flowy fabrics and vintage materials. But fashion is cyclical, and plenty of designers have cited Nicks as a reference in their collectsions.

Recently, Nicks was inducted into the 2019 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame by none other than Harry Styles. (Nicks was previously inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998, as a member of Fleetwood Mac.) For the occasion, Nicks sported a black dress (her favorite color these days) with a shredded hemline, as well as crystal gloves and towering platforms. It was a look only a true music icon could pull off.
