Why Florence Pugh Is a Red Carpet Star in the Making

Florence Pugh, Vogue’s newest cover star, is one of Hollywood’s most promising talents. Looking back across 2019, the 24-year-old English actress had a stellar year, with two major film roles under her belt: She was held captive by a Swedish cult in Midsommar, and then won hearts as Amy March in Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Little Women. Finally, this coming year, she’s also set to light up multiplexes in Marvel’s Black Widow. Along her rise to stardom, however, Pugh has also maintained another consistent win: her red carpet style.

Since her early days, the star has worked with stylist Rebecca Corbin-Murray, who has also worked with Gemma Chan and Anna Paquin. Together, the duo have cultivated a signature aesthetic on the step-and-repeat that is all about embracing glamour—with a modern twist. “Florence favors idiosyncratic, wild, and fearlessly imaginative brands,” said Corbin-Murray. “She loves things slightly off kilter and with a sense of humor.” Think classic gowns that feature unexpected details, such as asymmetrical necklines or voluminous shapes. At the 2019 Governors Awards, for instance, she wowed in a purple Valentino Haute Couture dress with dramatic ruffles; equally as dazzling was the custom blue Schiaparelli gown with delicate beading she wore to the Cannes Film Festival last year. Her most recent appearance, at a Little Women screening, saw her put a whimsical take on the classic shirt dress, too (her version, by Emilia Wickstead, came in pink gingham with a center cutout). As her film projects continue piling up, it seems clear that her winning-moments style will only add up too.
